MC Number Issued but Authority Not Active: What to Check

Receiving an MC number is not the same as receiving permission to operate. Check the actual authority status before accepting work that requires it.

Important: This guide is general information. Requirements can depend on the business, vehicle, jurisdiction, and current agency rules.

Check the right status

Look up the company using the correct USDOT and MC identifiers through the official FMCSA registration and authority resources. Review the authority type and application status, not just whether a company record exists.

Save the result and date checked. When asking for help, describe exactly what the status says instead of reporting only that the number appears online. That makes it easier to distinguish a missing filing from a different application issue.

Ask whether the required insurance filing has posted

A policy purchase and an insurer's regulatory filing are separate steps. FMCSA's records show insurance filings and relevant effective or cancellation information. Ask your insurer to confirm the required filing was submitted for the correct entity and authority.

If the insurer says it was sent but the agency record does not show it, request the submission details. Do not buy a second service simply because the first submission has not been reconciled.

Review the process-agent designation

Check that the required BOC-3 is on file for the correct company. If it is missing or appears under incorrect information, contact the process-agent provider with your identifiers and filing receipt.

A completed BOC-3 is one requirement, not a guarantee that the entire authority application is approved. Review all outstanding requirements together.

Build a short troubleshooting packet

  • Legal business name, USDOT number, and MC number.
  • Application confirmation and any FMCSA correspondence.
  • Insurance filing information supplied by the insurer.
  • BOC-3 confirmation and provider contact information.
  • A dated copy of the status you are trying to resolve.

Escalate the specific issue

Contact the responsible insurer or filing provider for its missing item, and use official FMCSA support for application-status questions. Ask what is outstanding and what action is needed rather than requesting a guaranteed activation date.

Do not begin operations requiring authority until the agency confirms the applicable authority is effective. A booked load, paid application fee, or visible MC number does not substitute for that status.
